St Francis of Assisi

Year Group Saint For: Year 8

Feast Day: 4th October

Patron Saint of: Animals and ecology

Elected Charity: RSPCA

Francis enjoyed a very rich easy life growing up because of his father’s wealth and the permissiveness of the times. From the beginning everyone — and I mean everyone — loved Francis. He was constantly happy, charming, and a born leader. If he was picky, people excused him. If he was ill, people took care of him. If he was so much of a dreamer he did poorly in school, no one minded. In many ways he was too easy to like for his own good. No one tried to control him or teach him.

Francis grew up very popular and admitted that his life before the age of 25 was a sinful life.

He went to war and fought for Assisi and was due to fight in the crusades when God appeared to Francis in a dream and changed Francis’ life forever. Francis began to spend more time in prayer. It was through his prayer that he heard God calling him to repair his Church. Not the building but the people.

St Francis gave up all his wealth and lived a very simple life devoted to God. He is the Patron Saint of Animals, Merchants & Ecology.

Francis is the Patron Saint of Animals and ecology so it makes perfect sense for the Catholic Social Teaching Principle that we are going to focus on this year is Creation and Environment and also the Common Good.
