Introduction

Students within Buxton and the local area have a wide variety of sporting opportunities that they can access outside of the curriculum time. The curriculum content within PE is reflective of this and gives students opportunities to embrace differing activities.

PE and School Sport provide all students with the opportunity to develop as a whole individual. Students not only develop their physical literacy and sport related skills but also the laws and values of good sportsmanship. Linking to the British Values students learn to work together respectfully regardless of the beliefs or background of an individual which helps to develop diversity appreciation and collaboration towards achieving common goals. Individual liberty is promoted through the development and understanding of each students’ rights to access a safe learning environment and understanding how their own decision making could impact on another person’s safety.  Mutual respect is developed between students as they learn to work together collaboratively by celebrating another person’s success and respecting their personal achievements. Democracy is developed through students working together as a team, cooperating and respecting diversity with the view that they become active and engaged members of society. The rule of law promotes the importance of developing a fair and consistent environment where people are accountable for their actions, and this is taught through providing students with the knowledge as they learn this through differing sports.

Catholic Social Teaching is promoted within PE as follows:

Human Dignity – Students are provided with the opportunity to embrace differing sports activities and to work with differing people. The variety of sporting activities allows students to develop a passion for participating in Physical Activity and Sport.  Students gain firsthand experience of working within team in both competitive and non-competitive situations and how to manage themselves when faced with adversity.

The Common Good – allows students to participate in a variety of differing roles from performer to leader to official in variety of contexts. This is demonstrated within lessons, inter house competitions and whole school events such as Sports Day. Students are also encouraged to take part within Charity Sporting events to help raise money for either local or national causes.

Solidarity – students are taught the values of good sportsmanship and are shown examples of this within activities. Students develop the ability to work alone and as part of a team to achieve a common goal. Students can model to differing students how to perform well but also how to motivate and encourage all to participate to the best of their ability.

Participation – students wear at STM PE kit when taking part in lesson, extracurricular activities or when representing STM at events.  All students can attend a variety of clubs to help them develop their love of sport and improve their performance within the activities. Students are shown the importance and value of positive teamwork and to support other students within lessons and sporting activities. Within KS4 students are shown how they can continue to access sporting activities within the wider community.

Subsidiarity – Students are taught the values of Sportsmanship and how these can be applied to a variety of sporting situations. An emphasis is placed within students to model respective behaviour, provide positive feedback to others as they perform and how to support another student if they are upset at a result. Students are also shown how to adapt and amend activities to meet their own needs.
